Welcome to Year 5

EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WHICH YOU CAN USE TO CHANGE THE WORLD

As pupils move into Year 5 they follow a subject-based, broad curriculum, with an increasing focus on preparation for the 11+ and on early introduction to the Common Entrance syllabus which begins in earnest in Year 6.
Pupils are set according to ability in English, Maths, Science and French. Prep (homework) is set twice a day, lasting twenty minutes per subject (apart from Wednesdays when the focus is reading).
As members of a Year 5 form group, pupils forge a close bond with their Form Tutor and develop an awareness of their place in the wider community in an environment that is nurturing and supportive of the interests of every child.
In this important year pupils develop greater independence and responsibility, improving their own learning and performance through ‘Learning to Learn’ and ‘Growth Mindset’ activities. It is our intention to develop the qualities of kindness, empathy and respect, with staff and families working together. The PSHE programme of study covers key themes such as ‘Taking Care of Others’ and ‘Taking Care of the Environment’, together with ‘Citizenship Links’ which develop understanding of our multicultural society and communication skills.
Pupils have the opportunity to have their voice heard through platforms such as the School Council, for example; recently prioritising and purchasing items for indoor break times.
