A squad of 8 boys left Birchfield School in Albrighton on Saturday, 4 November to travel to Taunton, Somerset to compete in the finals of the IAPS U13 six-a-side football finals.

The Birchfield Squad had seen off some very strong competition in the Midlands Regionals to become Midlands Champions and represent our region in the National Finals.

Fourteen regions were represented on Sunday at King’s College, Taunton with two pools of seven teams playing simultaneously.

Birchfield started confidently, beating St Christopher’s, Chigwell and Twyford and only succumbing to New Beacon.  Birchfield’s strong performance in the morning meant a finish at 3rd in their group and into the plate competition.   In the afternoon, Birchfield faced their strongest challenge against much larger schools Millfield and Ludgrove, Prince William and Harry’s old Prep School. These two teams overpowered Birchfield despite courageous play from every boy and strong support from the sideline giving them an overall 7th in the competition and a top 10 placing in the country.

Mr Reynolds watched all the action and was proud of the squad and their commitment. ‘Seventy six schools took part in the competition; Birchfield was the smallest school in the competition and as the fantastic result proves, we punched above our weight when it mattered. We are hugely proud of our sporting tradition of developing young players to achieve success in every field.’
